| Elam (Uvajiya): satrapy of the ancient Persian empire, in the
south-west of modern Iran; capital Susa. Also known as Uxia and Susiana.
Although it revolted once against the Persians (in 522 under ššina
and Martiya; the next year under Atamaita),
it was essentially a loyal part of the empire. The Elamite language
remained in use in the imperial chancellery. |
