Satraps (Old Persian khšaçapavan): the governors of the
satrapies (provinces) of the ancient Persian empire. There are several
catalogues of these parts of the empire; the best known are Darius' Behistun
inscription and the tribute list included in the Histories
of the Greek researcher Herodotus.
Other catalogues are the inscription on Darius' grave at Naqš-i-Rustam,
an inscription by Xerxes
and the satrapies mentioned in a book about Alexander the Great, the Anabasis
by Arrian. (Although there are differences, there are more similarities,
as this table indicates.
