Sogdiana Sogdiana (Old-Persian Sugda): Northeastern satrapy of the ancient Persian empire, roughly equivalent to modern Tajikistan and eastern Uzbekistan. It was added to the Persian empire by king Cyrus. Its capital Maracanda is now known as Samarkand. Back to catalogue of proper names
