The Persians discerned three Greek states:
-
"those who dwell by the sea": the Greeks in Asia Minor (Ionia, Hebrew: Yavan)
-
"those who dwell across the sea": perhaps the inhabitants of Aegean islands
like Samus and Lesbos, perhaps those living in northern parts of Greece
(Thessaly and Boeotia)
-
"those who wear a sun hat": the Macedonians
The word Yaunâ is derived from "Ionian", which the Greeks used to
describe the Greeks living in Asia Minor. |
