Plutarch's Lives is a unique presentation of Biographies of the Greco-Roman world. Plutarch gives biographies of 49 different historically important persons. These are of paired Greeks and Romans who are similar in character and then he compares them. A few of the pairings have no accompanying comparison but the comparison is made in the biography. Plutarch not only gives a historical account but places value judgements on the moral strength of the personalities. This makes his writing all the more interesting and instructive relative to the actual humanity and perception of moral reality in the times he wrote about. There is probably no better way to become acquainted with the Greco-Roman world than through the writings of Plutarch. This public domain version is formatted in html by Fred P Miller
